Suggestions Welcome

Okay, so I have delayed in booking a hotel for our stay in Chicago over the marathon weekend and now I'm feeling a bit frightened b/c many of the hotels listed on Chicago's home page for the marathon are sold out for that weekend.

Now, I know I'll find something, but I must find it quickly (like today or tomorrow). Any suggestions from those of you who live in Chicago, travel there frequently, or know the city? Preferrably, I'd like something relatively close to the start, but I'm beginning to believe that might be pie-in-the-sky.

Anyhoo, anything in the central, downtown area (sorry, I'm not familiar with Chicago at all). I just don't want to be a $50 cab ride away from the start.

Jess, drop me an e-mail and I can help scope out places that my be a little further from the start line. barbsmarathon AT gmail.com. Plus if you're finding stuff that's available Mike and I can put it in proximity of the start line for you.

Your best bet may be to take the train the morning of the race. There will be TONS of folks doing that. Cabs may be tough to come by and you'll be sitting in traffic on the way to the starting line (which = $$). But the bus and train system is safe and runs more frequently the morning of the race to ensure everyone gets down there in time.

You check out Expedia.com or Travelocity.com and find any cheap hotel near Grant Park. Let me know if you need any help.

Sorry chica, the windy city isn't my area. I hope you find something though!! GOOD LUCK!!! When all else fails I'm sure you could stay at an hourly rate motel, where all the hookers and pimps chill :P Just think of all the hilarious pics you could get from that LOL

This has been an issue for everyone I know. I suggest visiting hotel websites every few days or so, including those like hotel.com because the availability seems to change on a dime. One person I know stays out near O'Hare because the Blue Line gets you downtown in about 45 minutes. However, construction has caused delays lately. Also try the Lincoln Park Inn or the Days Inn Lincoln Park -- anything in Lincoln Park or the Gold Coast because those 'hoods are a quick el ride downtown. I'd try to avoid cabs as well, as someone else said.

I'll keep you posted if I hear anything else. Unfortunately for everyone else, I stay free with friends. But I might not be running if Poopy Foot doesn't cooperate.

Cab rides shouldn't be that much if you stay downtown and you might be able to take a free tram/trolley thing.

I am staying at the Allerton this week. Not recommended. The haunted Hotel 71 was beautiful and nice. There are a million Radison's, Marriotts, and Hilton's here....

Good luck!

Check out tripadvisor.com...I found a great deal through a guy on the forums. Hotel Monaco and Hotel Burnham were reasonable last year and still had rooms available in July. Also, try the Best Western River North...not a luxurious place, but it was clean, affordable, convenient and still had a few rooms available when other hotels did not. Plus, if you have family travelling with you, they can see you 2x on the marathon route by just walking over a block or two.
