Continued Cold

The cold snap here continues with temperatures here in South Florida dipping into the 30s, and with a "wind chill" (I've never heard the weather people use that phrase in this region before!), it has certainly dipped below freezing in some spots. Bad news for citrus growers and Disney goers alike.

So for my run today, I donned clothes that I haven't pulled out of the closet in over a year: running tights, a long sleeve tech shirt that has extra long sleeves with thumb holes (kinda doubles as simple gloves), and a stocking hat. I just had a 3 miler scheduled for today, but I took a route that is out and back -- in this case that meant 1.5 miles into the cold wind and 1.5 miles with it to my back.

1: 9:44
2: 9:37
3: 9:35

Total: 28:57

Once I got out there and I warmed up, the cold weather was actually comfortable. It's just that initial shock that is hard to adjust to. Now, I know that all of you who live in colder climates are laughing at my struggle with the recent cold temps, but consider how suddenly the cold descended on us: Tuesday it was 80; yesterday, we woke up and it was 38. That's a huge difference overnight. I know it's not as cold as what some of you are currently experiencing, but it feels dang cold to me right now.

The good thing is I get to break out some rarely used cold weather clothing: sweaters, coats, etc, and that's kinda fun -- it's like getting new clothes!

Drink a lot of water, OJ, and take your vitamins... whenever we have huge swings in the weather like that, I get sick. I don't know what it is, but it never fails.

Way to get out there and get a run in Jess! You go girl!

Running in the cold can be exhilirating, as long as you have the stuff and dress properly! It does get a little colder here, but I'm with you on the temp swings.

Running in the cold makes me feel like a "serious" runner.

I'm surprised that you even own those types of clothes LOL

I saw a picture today of an orange coated in ice ... it even had an icicle hanging from it! Never saw that before. Be safe out there!

No, it's still cold, no matter how you slice it. I'm hoping it comes back up into the 80's by Sat. as we are flying to Tampa tmw to get on the cruise ship Saturday.

It would suck indeed to fly all the way to FL only to have temps remain as cold as they are here in MI.

Jess,
I open up my google reader and you have 8 new posts. Well I will reply to this one (I did read all of them).
Sorry about the 5K time, better luck this year.
Giving up soda and eating better, good for you. I have the same two goals. The multi-vitamin is also good for you. Keep up the running, even in the cold.

I'm with Marcy and really surprised that you own those kinds of clothes, too. I am sure if I lived in Florida I either wouldn't or wouldn't know where to find them if I did :P

I feel the same way about the other wardrobe. Of course I haven't really been outdoors since this morning, but I wore running tights for the first time in about 350 days. Hope you are keeping warm...

Kudos to you for braving the chilly temps! I took one look at the temperature gauge and lost my nerve. You runnin' machine!

Do you ever really feel warmed up? My legs always feel tense when it is that cold!

It is cold for Florida, as it is here in Houston. Stay bundled up. This is when that yucky cold stuff starts, with the 80's than the 30's..ugh!

I'm not laughing -- we have sudden cold fronts here in Chicago, and that first cold run of the year is always a shock to the system. The Weather Channel said yesterday that a strong Arctic front would be pushing down as far south as FL, so I guess they were right.

It's absolutely freezing here today, but by Monday it's supposed to be 50. So bizarre.

That's such crazy weather. But at least you get to wear rarely-worn items.

That's so great that you get out there still. I'm such a baby.

I just love cold weather running clothes. Way to brave the elements and get in that run.

We were in FLA last week and it was 85, I got to run a few times and it was hot, what a difference a few days make.
Now I'm back in Atlanta and it 31 degrees out, Yikes...

I'm sure the nice weather is just around the corner.
