Dr Appointment

Turns out, I didn't actually have to get blood drawn today. I have to go to a lab for that. Which is a "duh" on my part. I think I knew that, but it left my brain. The doctor's office gave me the necessary paperwork, and then I have to go to the lab for the blood withdrawal and then the lab sends the results to the dr's office. So, I guess I'll go to the lab tomorrow. Poop. I had psyched myself up for it today.

Anyway, the rest of the dr appointment was pretty uneventful, and consisted of the following:
  • Weigh in. I was 1 lbs heavier than last time. I don't even consider that a gain, especially since I hadn't even peed yet when she weighed me. I have a few weeks left in my first trimester, but the dr, and the stack of books I have, say that 0-5 lbs is an average weight gain for the first 13 weeks. And some women even lose weight because of fatigue or vomiting. Ultimately, the dr said that women usually gain an average of 20-35 lbs in the course of the pregnancy, and she said that because I'm so small, I will probably not gain more than 20 lbs (but it's entirely possible I will gain more than that, at which point I will resemble a beach ball).
  • Pee in a cup. SOP at the OB office. They always need some urine for analysis. I guess they like to look at pee.
  • Blood pressure. 104 over 70. Excellent.
  • Pulse. 64. Also excellent.
  • String of questions. Just like the last time I visited, they asked me a lot of questions. This time around, questions were more focused around genetic predispositions towards diseases like diabetes and cancer. At this point in the appointment, Jerry actually got to participate since they asked him questions about his medical and genetic history as well (although, for the above diseases, it's really more important if I have any history of those things, which I don't).
  • Another pelvic exam. Some latex gloves, some lube, some poking around and she said the baby felt exactly on track for 9 and 1/2 weeks along. Hopefully, in the next few visits, they will begin using Doppler so we can hear the baby's heartbeat. Until then, I have to take her word that the grape-sized embryo is in there.
  • Office time with the dr. Time for her to tell Jerry and I stuff, and time for us to ask questions. I'm really without questions, to be honest. Like any dedicated reader, I have been surfing the web and reading several books, so I feel pretty well-informed so far. And, I have two close friends who have had babies in the past year, and I have a colleague at work who is currently 7 months preggo, and she and I spent an hour and a half talking today. Plus, I have no real anxiety at this point, so there are no frantic questions (unless the dr can solve the troublesome issues surrounding my leave from work -- more on that later).

Last comment on the dr: In the post where I mentioned how the dr told me not to run, many of you advised me to switch doctors, which was thoughtful advice, but let me make a few clarifications. I go to a group practice where there are 6 doctors. I make appointments to meet with each one at least once because any one of them could be the one on-call when I go into labor, so any one of them could deliver the baby. So, while the doctor who told me not run was the same doctor I saw today (and aside from the whole "I don't like running" spiel from her, she's very, very nice), she's not the one I'll see every time and she may not be the one who delivers.

Additionally, I'm not the sort of person who needs a "relationship" with a doctor. I'm quite practical about this sort of stuff, and frankly, I just want competent pre-natal care, and someone to deliver that baby. In a hospital. Where there are drugs.

Plus, this doctor's office is right next door to a Chipotle! Fantastic location (and can that truly be a coincidence? seems like the marketing people at Chipotle did their research on that one). So, after my appointment today, we went and got some 1,200 calorie burritos. With chips and salsa. Ole!

I see what you're saying with the Dr's. Mine are like that as well but it's only 2 Drs. One visit would be with the woman Dr and then the next would be with the dude.

Ahhh pissing in the cup. It only took me 4-5 visits before I realized I should probably stick the dayum thing right up next to my cooter so I wouldn't get any on my hands *sigh* I'm a slow learner I guess HAHA

I hate doctors. Glad your visit was eventful.

Generally speaking, sounds like an okay appt!

I hope they do an ultrasound for you next time, there's nothing quite like seeing that little heartbeat for the first time. :-)

Holy crap
I'm a day late and a dollar short!
CONGRATSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!

I think you have to pee in the cup like EVERY time you go. So get used to it!

The baby whisperer is now the baby maker! Good on ya! I'm excited for you guys!

Glad everything went well at the doctor's. I agree, just give me a doctor who know what they are doing. Being nice is a bonus.

Its good that you have an appointment with all 6 dr.'s. It is good to at least meet the person that is going to be knuckle deep in your crotch for the 36 hours of labor that you are going to go through.

Just kidding, it is sure to be less that 24.

So which Dr.s office did you choose? And what hospital?

Congratulations on an A+ at your Dr. appt! I think it's so important to do the research yourself, since different doctors will always tell you different things.

To answer your question re: Breaking Dawn... I really enjoyed the first half, but don't love some of the turns it has taken in the second half. I still have 100 or so pages to read so I will reserve my complete judgement til then. So far, I have to say New Moon was my overall least favourite.

I'm going to see Twilight on Friday....hopefully I won't be to disappointed!

Glad your Drs appt was uneventful. Those are the best kind.

I can't wait for you to get the ultrasound. I'm excited for you.

forget comparing your weight to your last appointment. you should compare your weight before and after your trip to Chipotle ;)

glad everything went well at the doctor's, and good luck with getting blood drawn!

Glad your appointment went well! And LOL at Chipotle's, that'll make sure you gain enough.

Yeah, not a big deal if you know the dr or not. I met the guy who delivered Jones for the first time five minutes before I started pushing. And he did a wonderful job and I didn't care at all that we didn't have a "relationship".

I'm confused...are you using Erin and my doctors office? When you said next to Chipotle it got me thinking that I never asked. Not that there aren't other Chipotle's out there and maybe being next to an ob/gyn's office is part of their marketing strategy.

I also didn't care about a "relationship" and in the end it wasn't one of the doctors I knew, nor their after hours crew whose pictures you see on the bulletin board.

In fact, I still don't even know the name of the gal who delivered Rylee. She was just passing by and decided to catch and stitch. Which is all they really do anyway. :)

I always lost weight and then ended up only gaining about 10 total because of the loss in the first trimester. Sounds like a good visit!

Sound like your appointment went really well and you have a great attitude about the docs you will see. I would have put on 100lbs if there was a chipotle next to the OB clinic.

Completely OT,
You mentioned that you had friends that celebrated Serbian Christmas from Crosby....
We celebrated our Christmas with friend of the family and I met some people that just happen to be from Crosby tonight. It would be a really small world if we are referring to the same people. I am from Duluth, so it is not too far away.

All your vitals look great! The doppler is really cool... though I think it is finnicky in an early stages. I had a doppler done at like 10.5 weeks and they heard the heartbeat. And then I had one done at 11.5 weeks and they couldn't find it... so they brought out the ultrasound and found it that way. Good luck at the lab!

I'm sure if you have not had the "wait until you...." comments they will start any day.

If you have not, let me be the first.

Wait until you have to reach AROUND the belly to pee in that cup. It's an exercise in flexibility and I firmly believe the docs have cameras in those bathrooms to provide themselves some comic relief after looking at women's hoohahs all day.

Sounds like everything is going great. Wait until you hear the heartbeat. My husband swears it sounds like the Lone Ranger.

Chipotle makes up for the asinine anti-runner-lady-doctor-thing FO SHO!

Way to go rockin' the exam!

The pee thing gets even better when you have a big belly. LOL

Chipotle! We have one coming in here in G'ville. Heard great things about it, so am looking forward to visiting sometime soon.

I'm in the same boat as you with Dr's. I have about 8 dr's in the practice I go to, and saw almost all of them during pregnancy appts, but it just so happens that my Dr was the one that delivered Grace. Because of insurance switch, I'll be switcing Dr's this yr. It didn't matter one way or another during my pregnancy.
