For those at Virginia Tech. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of those connected to that campus: students, professors, administrators, parents; yesterday's events were tragic.
I haven't been able to watch much, as I had class all night and then left early this morning. But the things I was able to catch were mind-numbing. I found myself tearing up when Matt Lauer was interviewing a brother of a freshman girl that was killed. IT's just all soo sad.
I think it's cool that you took the time out on your blog to recognize the tragedy at VA Tech. I'll bet as someone who works on a college campus, you're especially affected.
Regarding news coverage, though, I find that, as horrible as this shooting was, I've been pretty much ignoring the coverage for two reasons: 1. There's too much of it and 2. I wonder what the point is of reading/watching it. Terrible event occurred. People died at the hands of a very troubled man. This has happened before, albeit with fewer people killed. I don't mean to trivialize it at ALL; it's horrible, and I am very sad for the families and friends of those who died and who were injured or traumatized. But what are we to do with this news coverage? And you know it will go on for days and days.
WS and BCG: I completely agree that the news coverage is out of hand. It reminds me of 9/11 when I just couldn't take another image of that second plane hitting the second tower.
The obcessive nature of news organizations' coverage almost desensitizes us to the tragedy.

Sh*t like that just shouldn't happen, it is totally unneccessary and incomprehensible. But, the 24 hour news coverage is a little overbearing also.
