The Thursday Report

Last night, I kept up my "good runner" status by running my prescripted 5 miles (and actually went closer to 5.5), and this morning I continued with the good behavior by running before work. I was also a very good "dog mom" and took Scooter with me.

He was a bundle of energy this morning, and greeted me in bed with a squeeky toy, so after I dressed in my running clothes, I leashed him up and we were outta there. Once again, the beginning of the run with him was a bit chaotic -- he was jumping and twirling and getting caught in his leash (at one point in wrapped around his stomach and up over his head) -- but after the first quarter mile, he settled down and trotted along at a normal pace.

He was able to go a little further than he was the last time, so we ran a total of about 2.25 miles and then walked the last stretch to complete 3 miles. Twice we had to sprint: once because he spotted a squirrel and once because there was someone on a golf cart to chase, and once he jumped about two feet in the air when he bounced onto a stick that surprised him (he's a little neurotic). Overall, it was a fun run once again: maybe we'll go again tomorrow morning. I have either cross training or a short run on the schedule, so perhaps he would enjoy another morning run.

i don't know how you haven't tripped over him and/or his leash yet, sending you flying face first into the asphalt. that's what would have happened to me by now. your coordination must be stellar

Actually she does that just fine on her own. I think the Scoots provides her with the balance she needs to remain upright. Bless that dog.

Your dog is adorable! A great way to "multi-task"...get in your run AND take dog for a walk!

Scooter running sounds kind of like mine.... it takes about a quarter mile for me to get comfortable with my stride, posture, and breathing.... maybe dogs are the same as humans in that aspect!?! Hehehe... Good job on being a "good runner".

Nice job on the run. Dogs and little critters are always bound for some playtime.

It sounds like Scooter has got you doing some speedwork!

Wow, he saw a squirrel and you managed to keep up with him? I could never run as fast as my Quincy when he's "on the hunt"! You are obviously a speed demon :)

BTW, I just caught up on your blog and I sympathize dearly with pukey pukerson - I've struggled a lot with the same problem, although for me it's often just nausea, but here's my verdict: I really think it has to do with 1)hydration and 2)post-run fuel. If I am underhydrated, I feel completely nauseous and horrible. Which of course makes me not want to down any water, making the situation worse! But you have to force yourself to do it. Also, you can curb the problem by hydrating throughout your run - I seriously recommend you get a camelbak/fuel belt/torso pack or one of their kin. It allows you to sip whenever you feel like it during a run - and you're not at the mercy of your husband, either ;)

On the second point, the food: you've gotta eat after your run. Pronto. And I mean you've got to eat a LOT. You're burning hundreds, maybe even thousands of calories on a long run, and your body needs them back or it's going to go psycho on you. I usually down some OJ for a quick sugar fix, then make myself a big sandwich, and usually have something else substantial after a shower. Seriously, stuff yourself.

Anyway, I don't know if that would solve the problem for you, but it definitely has for me. And it feels so good to enjoy that post-run high somewhere other than the bathroom floor :)
