Part of my New Year's Running Resolutions was to work on the 3 "S's" of running: speed, strength, and stretching. So far this year, I have been good about working on my speed. But the strength and stretching? Yeah, not so much.
So instead of running today, I decided to do a form of exercise that I think achieves both those two neglected "S's": yoga.
I first took Scooter for a 1.5 mile walk (I would have walked further, but Scooter's patented "stop and sniff" method of walking makes it slow going exercise), then I came home, got out the yoga mat, pushed back the coffee table, and popped in a yoga DVD. Damn, it was tough.
It was Rodney Yee's "Power Yoga" and that dude (with his stretchy shorts and all-too-noticeable-bulge) really gives you a workout. I was 30 minutes and a countless number of sun salutations and warrior poses into it and I was sweating up a storm. When I finished the 60 minute program, my shoulders were a little shaky and I was pooped. I lay quite happily in corpse pose at the close. I do feel wonderfully stretched though (all those down dogs felt good on my calves and hammy's).
Now, I think I will make myself some dinner, drink the rest of a bottle of wine, and read my book ("Stardust" by Neil Gaimen -- just as good as the movie).

Ummmm... Exactly to which bulges where you referring ;-)
Yoga really knocks one's socks off.
Nice on the yoga. I must give it a try soon. I feel I am getting shorter from the lack of streching. Have a nice evening, Jess.
I wonder how the yoga would be with wine before hand? Might help me to sit still long enough to do it.
I was always interested in trying yoga. You may have just reignited my urge.
Wine ? I thought you were a beer girl ?
I need to work on those S's too...but somehow...yoga just doesnt do it for me. Good for you though!
60 minutes seems like a lot. I think I'd have to ease into it. Great work!
i've seen some of his yoga. it IS intense. good for you for getting through it!
I've just GOT to do some yoga. I know it will help keep me 'bendy'. Lord knows my perpetually tight hamstrings would benefit.
I need to try yoga. Good on you.
Man, I feel ya on neglecting the double-esses! I tried out some stretching and strength exercises that I hadn't done in a while last night and boy, they were tough. I guess that old adage 'if you don't use it, you lose it' is pretty true. My mom's a big fan of the ol' Rodney...maybe I need to pick up one of his DVDs sometime.
I plan to start yoga myself. I need to work on strength and stretching badly.
Yeah, I like a man in spandex leading me in Yoga too! Funny, I can totally picture Scooter stopping at every 7th blade of grass for a sniff and investigation.
Hey, great job on the race, and sorry to hear about Jerry's grandfather. Sorry about being so late on things!
that night sounds great! especially if the "rest of the bottle of wine" means that only one glass was missing thus far...woo hoo!
after reading posts like this, i'm always telling myself to DO MORE YOGA. I love it when I do it.
Great job with the yoga tape. Sounds like a fab workout. I didn't realize Stardust was a book first. I'll have to add that one to me list. I've got The Other Boleyn Girl on my nightstand to start reading next. Haven't seen the movie, but I hear the book is really good.
Rodney Yee kicks my butt. He's way too hardcore for me!
Nice job on the yoga! hope the rest of your night was relaxing
Sounds like you had a good workout. Wilson is like that except he's more of a run back and forth and get in your way kind of walker.
Yoga always kicks my butt, but its a nice switch from running sometimes. I always have to take a class though, I can never get motivated to do the video thing.
I, too need to concentrate more on the 3 s's. I'm starting to do strength training 2x/week, and will be doing a stretching session at least once a week, more importantly need to work on speed.
I'm doing Pilates for core work but really ought to alternate between it and yoga.
Hope you enjoy your evening!!
good for you yoga can really do a body good!
Yoga rocks, doesn't it!!
