Slowskis No More

Ran 3 miles this evening. Time was 29:01.

But enough of that crap; more importantly: Comcast came today and installed our new HD cable and our new DVR! So, aside from the remote that looks like I need a degree in computer science to figure out, I'm excited about this new viewing endeavor, especially the DVR.

See, Jerry and I have TV-related-amnesia and excepting a few shows that we can remember the days and times for ("The Office" and "30 Rock" top the list), we can never remember what day, what time, or what channel any shows are on. For instance, Jerry really likes "Heroes," but because he could never remember when it was on, he ended up watching all of both seasons online. On my end, I know I like "The New Adventures of the Old Christine" as well as "How I Met Your Mother," but again, same issue. Except I didn't catch up with either online -- so I didn't see a single episode of the latter's 2nd season.

I blame my inability to truly care much about TV on many complex and emotionally frayed reasons.

By which I mean my mother.

She used to tell us that TV would "melt our brains" (which, doesn't that phrase immediately insert the image of the scene from "Indiana Jones and The Lost Ark" where the Nazis' eyes are melting after they open the ark? that's what I always pictured when my mother repeated her anti-TV-refrain), and she would frequently walk by the set as my brother and I were enjoying a little "Duck Tales" or "Transformers" and switch it off while issuing the command: "Go outside and play."

And the only grown-up show I can recall being allowed to watch as a child was "Cheers." I remember it was after my bedtime too, but I was allowed to stay up that extra half an hour each Thursday to watch it. (My bedtime when I was a kid -- except in summer -- was always 8 pm; however, I was allowed to stay awake as long as I wanted as long as I was in my bed and reading. So yeah, this is where a lifetime habit of reading before bed began. And why I have spent countless nights of little sleep to finish a particularly intriguing book.)

Where Jerry's inability to remember days and times for TV shows comes from is a mystery; in other words, he's just plain forgetful. (I mean, c'mon, the guy doesn't even know our home phone number!)

So, now that we have a DVR, I hear it does the remembering and caring for you. Sweet deal. But does this mean that I'm gonna have to spend more time watching TV? I don't know if I have room for that in my life!

DVR = addiction. I'd have to think long and hard between loved ones and my DVR.

Hey, I can't blame your husband. I forget my cell phone number. Know why? BECAUSE I NEVER CALL MY CELL PHONE NUMBER!

I LOOOOVE my DVR. You're life will never be the same.

You may watch more shows...but waaaay fewer commercials, so it evens out (that's what I keep telling myself anyway)

I'm sorry to break this to you, but DVR will be the end of you. Accept it now. I thought I would watch less TV when we got DVR... HA! that's a joke... I probably watch double b/c all of those shows you were too busy to watch before, you just record and then you have marathon tv-watching weekends (not to be confused w/ the marathon where you actually exert physical activity for 26.2 miles).

Everyone else is right. DVR is some dangerous stuff. Now I DVR almost everything and never watch live tv.

Oh yeah life without DVR (TiVo in our case) is just unimaginable!

DVR is one of the greatest technological inventions and you can use the phrase "DVR" as different parts of speech...for instance "I'm DVRing that show" or "I DVRed that show."

It is good for recording a bunch of stuff that you can watch on those days it is too rainy to go outdoors.

I love my DVR. I never have time to watch my shows and I just "collect them" and do a marathon when I have a sick day or a couple of hours to kill. Although I hear you about the remote....my 6 year old had to show me the ropes.

With all those saved shows, you may find yourself sneaking in a little extra tv time but with all our rainy days, you can make yourself think it's worth it. Just get all your chores done first :)

Duke Tales and Transformers, classics! There aren't any more good cartoons. I also like gummy bears (I think that was the name).

Since the advent of the DVR (Tivo), we actually watch less TV.

DVR is the BEST invention ever! A lot of times I don't even bother staying up or waiting til my show comes on because I'd rather wait til the DVR gets it and I can fast forward through the commercials.

You will be addicted to that DVR in no time. We didn't want one at first, but within a day of getting it, we were hooked! I honestly can't imagine not having one now. I haven't had to watch a commercial in a couple of years!

whoo hoo on HD and DVR. One recommendation... get a universal remote. Once you (or Jerry) programs it, only one button to hit and you're golden... :)it's seriously the only way I can get the TV, speakers, big black box thing all to operate in harmony.

I agree. I love the DVR option. It tapes all my favorite shows - Diego, Dora the Explorer, Spongebob, and Days of our Lives... hehe. See, Grace benefits the most from DVR. Nice new TV pics, Jess.

No more commercials.... You'll be able to zoom through your favorite shows. You won't want to watch real television again.

Good job on your run.
Why have I never heard of DVR. Probably because I am adverse to most technologies, except internet. I am guessing it is a digital video recorder. Sounds cool.

WOOO the DVR will change your life :)

Enjoy the new TV and DVR! I use mine to record my shows during the week (just can't keep up with work, every day stuff and So-much-running) and catch up on Sundays after long-ass runs when all I want to do is lay on the couch and there's nothing on. :p

The DVR may be my favorite tech invention - you will luv it! I almost wish we had 2 in the house as Monday night is a big night for me and TV viewing. I have like 4 shows that same night that I like to watch, but can only tape 2. If only I could move some to the TV wasteland that is Tues and Sat...

I remember when I was trying to explain Tivo to people and they just couldn't get it and would say, I can't handle one more piece of technology. Now look at all the devotees. You are going to love it.

DVR is a God-send! I don't even know the last time I watched one of "my shows" at it's regularly scheduled time!
