Much Better and A Surprise Discovery

First of all, I am feeling much improved. Still not 100%, but somewhere around 90%. Clearly, my immune system is superior and I can fight off a cold faster than other humans.

Remember my dilemma about pants about a week ago? Well, I was able to exchange the pants, and I got a new pair of pants (in the size 6 -- but a different pair) and 2 shirts. Never doubt my ability to return or exchange clothing, you just may not want to follow in my wake.

Anyhoo, bringing up those pants for the sake of bragging about returning them is not my point. Remember how I said they felt big? Well, I have come to notice in the past week that several pairs of pants feel a bit big about the middle -- not by a lot, but enough to notice a little extra room about the waist. So, this morning I decided to unearth the scale and see if there was some kind of difference, and viola! I am 3 pounds lighter! Huh.

I haven't really changed my exercise habits or my eating habits, so I can't really account for this loss, except that perhaps the gods have just decided to be beneficent. Or...could it be the lack of diet soda in my life? I'm reluctant to believe this could help shed pounds, but it's really the only primary thing that's changed about my diet in the past 4 weeks (although, I will admit to you that I've snuck about a handful of them in since New Year's). I mean, I've read that diet soda hinders weight loss, despite the fact that it has no calories, but I always thought that was bologna. I mean, it has NO calories!

What do you guys think?

A. The few pound weight loss is a fluke, Jess, and you'll gain it back on Super Bowl Sunday with the beer and chips.
B. The few pound weight loss is the result of weeks of dedicated running and the conscious consumption of frozen egg rolls and light beer -- the exercise and diet regimen of champions!
C. Your scale is broken, Jess.
D. The weight loss could be the result of eliminating diet soda from your day to day diet -- the additives, carbonation, and fake sugar make you fat despite the fact that the drink has no calories and is delicious.

Perhaps the sodium content in the soda was aiding water weight gain? Hey, good for you though! And thanks for the weight gain reminder for SuperBowl. Beer, loaded potato skins, wings, beer, chili cheese dip, beer...

I've read studies recently that have linked diet soda to an increased risk of metabolic syndrome (whereas real-sugar sodas were not associated), and other articles that have explained how, *somehow or other*, the fake sugars in diet soda confuse the body so that it processes them like real calories. Just say not to diet!

Carbonation is baaaad. Except if its in beer :-)

I think it's the soda. I rarely have a soda. It took a while, but I can tell the difference in how I look and feel without the soda, so I gave it up. But I will probably have one on Superbowl Sunday!

Just YAY for -3lbs.

Gosh darnit. Now I'm really going to have to cut out diet pepsi if it really is inhibiting weightloss. I did have a dream last night where I had to start drinking coffee to be able to hang out with Lisa :X

Definitely the soda. I've heard something similar to Moon about the diet sodas. Sweet job chica!!

I undoubtedly say it is the pop (I don't believe in saying 'soda'!).

A lot of artificial sugars have the effect of making you hungrier than you would be without them. I've also heard they encourage your body to store more fats (with regards to high fructose corn syrup, anyways).

The only time I'll ever drink pop is when I go out to eat, and that happens about once every two months; if you don't buy it, you don't drink it!

Ugh, just lately I have been increasing my diet soda consumption. Reading the comments here realizes what a mistake that was. Oopsie. Congrats on the weight loss!

It's D, totally D. Diet drinks are the devil and can totally screw up your body.

I hope that's not true of coffee and Coffeemate flavored creamer. Because I can't live without my coffee. =)

Glad you are almost 100%. Isn't it amazing how 3 pounds can make that much difference?!

I'm a horrible person for doing this, but I'm going to quote Paris Hilton on this one.... I think this is in her autobiography (which only exemplifies further how much of a raving bitch she is)... "Diet soda is for fat chicks."

I do know in Death by Supermarket: The Fattening, Dumbing Down, and Poisoning of America they talk alot about artificial sweeteners and how our bodies translate them. I won't bore you with details but it reinforces why your body is thanking you :-).

I admire your uncanny ability to return clothing :-).

D. For sure.
Soda is the devil. Even diet.

Well, there goes the highlight of my morning - Diet Coke with lime.

Well, congrats and GAWWWD you people are pissing me off. Marcy is so cute and thin, and then I see what she eats. You lose 3 without trying. Well, now, that's not fair, the diet soda is a big deal and you have taken major steps. Okay. I'll stop ranting now.

I am voting on D. I can not believe that diet soda makes poeple gain too.
Super Bowl Sunday, that is my holiday right there.
90% almost there..I never got sick, this time. It was looming but it is gone. I guess something can be said for exercise, diet and vitamins. Who woulda thunk it.

Diet soda causes some kind of weird bizzaro weight gain. Not to mention all of the evil chemicals in diet sodas will turn your innards into plastic over time.

I'd stay away from soda, period.

(getting off soap box now.)

I'll be not so creative and take door letter D also...congrats on the loss and glad you are feeling better.

It's probably a bit of all them, but the soda thing may have the bigger share!

Never accuse me of sitting on the fence!

Glad to hear you're feeling better.

I was just going to say pretty much was David said... the sodium in soda cause a lot of water weight gain...

Let me catch up on your blogs, you did awesome in Miami. 2:20ish is great. If you come to AZ for the RNR, we will be chasing eachother across the finish line. Also congrats to your husband, that is wonderful.
I have given up soda since new years and I am now down 9 lbs. (with other diet items affecting that number also)

I think D too, Jess. I've read and heard similar things about diet drinks and have talked to a few people that said after they only eliminated diet drinks from their daily routine, was when they noticed a drop in lbs.

I know I need to eliminate sweet tea to help me. Crap.
