Hi-Ho-Expo!

First up today, some answers to your questions about Minnesota-speak from yesterday's post:

Sarah: "Uff-da" is a generalized way of exressing something that is too much or excessive. It's equivilants might be: "oh my!" or "goodness" or my version: "holy shit!"

Viv: Yes, think "Fargo" for the accents. Even though every Minnesotan is offended by the accents in that movie and claim they are exaggerated, I have found that they are pretty much dead-on. However, if you want a movie with less stressed accents, see "Juno."

Marcy: I don't have a MN accent b/c I did not grow up in MN. I was born and raised in Colorado. I moved to MN when I was 18, and lived there for 8 years. Then I moved to FL. Where everyone speaks Spanish.

There ya go. Hope you feel adequately educated about the nuances of the regional language.

In running/race related news: after class today, I plan to quickly run my planned 3 miler, and then I'm piling into the car with the hubby and the in laws and we're headed to South Beach for the Race Expo. After we "hi-ho-expo," we'll probably walk around South Beach, hopefully spot someone famous, and then stop some place for dinner.

I want to get to bed early tonight in order to be well rested on Saturday -- so I can worry about Sunday's race.

Have a good Funday Friday everyone!

Colorado, Minnesota, Florida. Yeah, they're all pretty similar. Geez, you sure took a giant leap with that last move. No wonder the heat beats you up sometimes.

Have fun at the expo, and take some great pics for us. Don't worry about the race: it's going to happen, won't take all day, and it will end. There's always beer on the other side of the finish.

Hey dere. I hear yer gonna do a little jaahg on the good lord's day. Well you bee careful! Wear plenty o' suntan lotion and a haaht. If ya do real good, we'll bring ya over some tuna noodle casserole of some goo-lash! You take care now okay? You betcha!

Translated from Minnesotan:
Hi. I hear you're going to race on Sunday. Run hard, but not too hard. Wear sunscreen and a hat. If you do well, we will bring you a carbohydrate laden hot dish. Be well. All the best.

I have lived in Chicago for almost a year and STILL have my accent (at least I think do). I catch myself saying all of the Minnesotan slang. And YES, the movie Fargo annoyed that HELL out of me when it came out (and I ironic own the movie too).

Have fun at the expo.

May the weather be better than at your last big one (or hopefully they at least have liquids for you)!

My inlaws, who live in the UP of Michigan, have a front license plate that says Uff-da. (It's one of those airbrushed spray-painted ones...truly awful.) I think it's a Swedish expression.

I lived in Chicago from the time I was 14 til 24. I have that accent even though I have lived in Colorado or New Mexico since 1976. EEEK.

My best friend moved to England ten years ago and now when we talk on the phone, she mocks me for sounding midwestern like Fargo-speak - and it really pisses me off.

Ok. Glad I got that off my chest.

I enjoy the race expos. For some reason, I find a reason to buy more running accessories, apparel, etc that I don't even need.

Have an enjoyable, relaxing Saturday and a great race Sunday. I know you'll do swexcellent!!!
