Yesterday morning, I made good on my promise to see a massage therapist and I called for an appointment, and she wasn't there so I left a message. About an hour later, she returned my call and it went a little something like this:
Her: "Hi Jessica, this is Robin."
Me (thinking that she said Shannon, so I am assuming it's my friend, not someone I don't know): "What's up?"
Her: "Well, I hear you're having problems with your IT band."
Me: "You bought an Ikea bed?"
Her: "No, I said, 'Having trouble with your IT band'."
Me: "You what with an Ikea bed?"
Her: "What?"
Me: "What? Who is this?"
So, despite me coming across as the world's worst listener, and apparently, obsessed with Ikea as well, she did manage to fit me in for an appointment this afternoon at 5 pm. She also told me to start doing leg lift exercises to try and strengthen the muscles along the outside of my hip and she said to NOT foam roller b/c if it's inflamed, then the roller-ing will only aggravate the band. Okey-dokey then.
I'm looking forward to the massage; I haven't had one in almost a year and I think it will help in more ways than helping to relax that IT band. I'll let ya know how it goes. Hopefully, our miscommunicative start is not indicative of how the massage will go.

Ooooo, I'm jealous. I NEED a massage in the worst way. My hammies are so tight, I could play a violin concerto on 'em. ;)
Can't wait to hear how it goes.
Also...
see if she has any Ikea furniture in her house.
ROFLMAO!!
Ahhhhhhhhhh enjoy it!!! Hopefully it will do the trick ;-)
I'm not sure how you confused Robin with Shannon, but everything else sounds like the type of conversation I have all the time. Of course, that's because suddenly playing with a light switch is really interesting when the phone rings.
I'm a little confused by the foam roller advice since rollering is really just self-massage. But, I do agree with the leg lifts. You can also walk sideways on a treadmill to strengthen those same muscles.
I'm interested to hear how the massage goes, I'm a little nervous about having one because of the recovery time.
I {heart} Ikea. So I understand the confusion :-) Hope she's able to help!!
That's funny every time I hear it.
It is good that she gave you the heads up on the foam roller. She will have you back in running order in no time at all (no pun intended) :)
Yeah, not sure about the Robin/ Shannon confusion...although they both end in an "n" sound. Apparently you didn't start listening until then. I so would have been talking about Ikea - if it were open yet. Too funny! :)
that's hilarous, enjoy the massage!
I do about 4 kinds of legs lifts each day. I swear they will help you, too. They strengthen hip flexors and aductors, both of which are notoriously weak in many IT Band victims. I also have stretches to loosen up the flexors and hamstrings. I recommend both. But the inflammation needs to go away first--which takes time and patience--before you'll start to feel good again. Best of luck, and let me know if I can do anything to help.
That's too funny. I've never actually had a massage -- I'm too ticklish!
That is too funny. Sounds like something I would "hear"... are you as deaf as me though?
Enjoy your massage, jess!
I *love* massages!! Well, the ones I plan to get just for fun (not cause I'm hurt).
ikea bed. IT band. that is so funny.
Ask her to pick up some Diam bars next time she is at Ikea, they are delicious!
Hope the massage helps the IT band and relaxes not hurts
