Official Race Results

5 mile: 55:41

10 Mile: 1:54:55

Half: 2:35:40

20 Mile: 4:28:32

Finish: 6:26:14

So, as you can see, I was on track at first -- averaging 11 minute miles, which was about what I was hoping for -- but then, things started to deteriorate. The second half of the marathon took one and a half times longer than the first half, and it's quite clear from the time that what I described at mile 20 was pretty much a break down of all aspects.

Eh, I still finished.

However, this is precisely why I want to do another one sometime later in the year (by then, hopefully, the soreness will have dissipated). I want to do it better.

You know what...

A marathon finish is a marathon finish is a marathon finish. Be proud of that mouse ear medal!! :)

You've got the advantage now that you have one under your belt. You'll know how your body will react to the miles after you hit 20. You'll have a better mental grasp on where you can "allow" your slowest miles on the course. You'll know what pace you should start out at and where you should settle. You know the mental toughness that is needed to get you to the finish line.

Most importantly, you'll know how to train more efficiently. And that, my dear, can help shave off a nice chunk of time on your next marathon.

Consider this marathon as your race predictor...you'll use this to base your upcoming tempo runs on. You'll be able to be smarter about speedwork...know when and where to push yourself.

You're now at a great advantage. So embrace this wealth of knowledge and apply it to your next marathon training regime. Hopefully we'll see you in Chicago where the course is flat, fast, and most importantly, a blast!

I can't believe I've been so absent from the blogosphere that I missed your marathon! You rock! Congratulations on finishing -- I know you were doubtful, but I knew you could do it. Just wait for your second one -- it'll be so much better!
