After finishing a race, my next thought is usually: What's next? But after finishing Colfax, I know that my next planned race isn't until October (the Army 10 Miler), so instead of thinking about gearing up for another upcoming race, I'm thinking of taking advantage of a light summer race schedule and giving myself a bit of a breaky-break.
I'm not saying I'm not gonna run; I'm saying that I'm not gonna specifically "train." I'm gonna run what feels comfortable each week, and maintain a base, but I'm not going to follow any schedules. In Florida, it's a good time to scale back on running -- it just gets so hot here in the summer that training can be miserable (ie, read the entire summer of posts from 2007 when I was training for Chicago). So, while many of you are gearing up for the fall race calendar, I think I am going to gear down.
Maybe I should take up swimming. That would be a good summer activity, wouldn't it?

I'm dying for a no-plan plan. Embrace the freedom!!
Swiming would be cooler-that's for sure!
Enjoy the c a l m.
Swimming...In the ocean? I'm far too much of a sissy for that. I go no place where anything can eat me.
great job on the HM...how was it running at altitude. Good luck with the no plan-plan - I enjoyed it quite a bit. Swimming is nice, but most pools are so hot this time of year it is hardly even refreshing. Gotta love Florida summers.
If you take up swimming, then the next thing you know you'll take up biking, and then you'll want to be a triathlete :P Don't leave me *sniff* *sniff* They're all leaving me LOL
would you be ocean swimming? sounds exciting but also scary...
I can't imagine training in that kind of heat. Makes me almost thankful to live in this shithole.
Swimming is way too hardcore for me. You're going to be uber hawt by end of summer :-P
I absolutely agree that swimming is a good idea. I'll ramp up my training and run for YOU this summer as I prepare for my Sept marathon. :)
I think it is a great idea to just take things as they come in the summer time. I was in Orlando last weekend and struggled in the heat.
swimming AND cycling are great for the summer :-)
Have a great time with to no-plan plan. That summer heat can be brutal
I think it is the perfect time of year to be taking a break, especially in Florida. Taking up another activity is also a good idea, the cross training will help with running. Maybe tri's are in your future. Are you still playing soccer?
Ha ha. Sounds familiar. I'm enjoying NOT being in training for a while. My next race isn't until October and I'm all about just chillin' like a villian for a while. (But of course I'm still running)
Swimming? That's crazy talk. Only people looking to do a triathlon talk like---wait a second! You're not thinking of...becoming a triathlete?? Damn it, we lose another one.
*cough*swim-bike-run*cough*
the only way I am ramping up is if I get into NYC.
otherwise, being here in hotter than hell houston, texas, we just survive.
we run, but only what we have to and at a pace that wont kill us, but keep us at a good base.
whatever the hell that means.
It's actually the perfect time to get serious about your drinking!
When it's too hot or too cold to go outside. That's the pefect time for swimming (at an indoor gym pool) in my opinion!!
Blogger is hating on me again. I tried leaving a comment, of course, it was a long one, and Blogger ate it. I love the no-plan plan and have been on one for quite a while. I'll get back to it, but not wanting to do it in our weather either.
On another note, do you have any tips for me re: indoor painting? We're going to try to paint our master bath and bedroom over the holiday weekend and I've never done it before. Any brushes you recommend? Paint? I'm going to use Pratt & Lambert for the bedroom, but may not go as expensive for the bathroom. Do you use a paint pan or put one of those things in the can?
Thanks!
Margo
For the next 8 weeks I plan to exercise based on hours on not a specific exercise. I will just do whatever feels right for that day.
