Baby Class #3: Infant Care

Last night in our baby class, it was a crash course in everything we need to know to take care of the baby: So, first we had the bejesus scared out of us about drowning and SIDS, then we learned everything from how to bathe them and take care of that nasty umbilical cord to trimming their fingernails to changing their diapers.

The best part of the class was the "hands on" experience when we practiced swaddling and diaper changing. We had to bring in a doll or stuffed animal for this, and we only had a stuffed bear that someone gave us as a shower gift, but I think it was appropriate since before we knew Norah was girl, we referred to her as Little Baby Bear. So, here's Jerry demonstrating the swaddle with LBB: Apparently, he can do it with his eyes closed. Awww, look at that burrito-ized bear! All snuggled up. Jerry has mad swaddling-skillz; I told him that since he's so proficient at it, he can be in charge of it when Norah arrives.
And, here's Jerry practicing his diaper changing prowess. Turns out, our bear's butt was a large booty for the newborn diaper we were provided with, so it was a tight fit, but Jerry made it work.
The only problem is that if this bear wants to feel her legs, she's gonna have issues, because I'm pretty sure the circulation was cut off to her lower extremities.
But, he did a better job than I did. When I put the diaper on, I didn't get it fitted around the bear's big booty very well, and it slipped off her butt. I guess I get a FAIL in diaper application.

Those pictures are so cute! Guess Jerry will have to in charge of swaddling AND diapering . . . that could really work for you, you know.

i was always better at swaddling than kelley was, according to her. I did enjoy the little burrito sized babies.

I still think it's funny to look back at those first few weeks after our first one was born. Before the birth we got really annoyed and sick of everyone telling us how crazy it was going to be caring for a newborn. Then 2 weeks after she exclaimed to me how she couldn't believe nobody told us how crazy it was going to be caring for a newborn! our oldest turns 4 next week. glad you can get in all of these classes, they really do help. if you can get in a cpr class, that's really important too.

Now all I can think of is that scene in Three Men and a Baby when Tom Selleck tries to put very large diapers on the baby and they keep falling off and then he resorts to duct tape or something. My advice to you--wear a rubber suit. Norah may try to take a leak on you. :)

Sounds like Jerry will be busy swaddling and diaper-changing! :)

The sad thing is you'll be totally incompentent for the first few weeks... but you'll catch on soon!

quite a week, failing swaddling and barfing....I'm guessing you'll soon want all of this overwhith, and fast!

Picture #2 - bear has a "uh, he actually did it" look on his face.

Picture #4 - bear looks a little pissed. Then again, I would too if my diaper were extra tight.

Good news is babies are pretty forgiving of new parents, if a bit noisy... and smelly...

Now, where are my bare chested pics of Scooter? :-D

why don't you just buy one of those dolls that pee and poop and just practice with that? I find it hard to believe you've never changed a diaper! ;) And way to go Jerry!

Sounds like Jerry will need to be the official diaper changer. :-) I just stumbled on your blog while looking for blogs of other women who are running while pregnant. I was 33 weeks yesterday and have been running the whole time. DH and I have yet to take the Baby Care Basics class so it's good to see what we have to look forward to! Love the pictures!

I love hearing about the baby classes!!! And um, the first time you get peed on, I'm sure you'll remember to pull the diaper up in the back :)

Is that a beer on the table in the first pic? AWESOME!

Did the bear grab herself between her legs and throw the poop around? Maybe that's in the advanced class.

So diaper duty will either be no circulation or a droopy diaper, huh? Norah's gonna have to learn some hands-on skills really quick!

Jer-Bear knows how to swaddle but he has severly limited skills in the diaper changing area. He can come practice on Miller.

Diapers are easy when they are newborns. It's Rylee's age that is a challenge. She's rolling and twisting all over the place lately. Yesterday mom struggled to put one on and later Rylee peed out the side - I guess it was also lacking in the structural integrity department. :)

Awwwhhhhh how cute!! You guys are gonna do awesome! Here's a little tip that they don't tell you. Girls get a lot of poop in the folds of their hoo hoo when they're newborns. Q tips will be your best friend HAHAA

Nah, you will be fine. I hope you were. It's good that you had fun during the whole experience. I just noticed you used a bear stuffed toy. You should've practiced on a baby doll. That'll be more realistic, I think.
