Freakin Out, Dudes

A few requested facts first:

We leave on Thursday. At 11:40 am. Would anyone like the flight number as well?

Also, my bib # is 36421, so you can spend Sunday morning tracking me. If you'd like, I could wear a homing device.

So, yeah, the stress of thinking about the marathon has finally gotten to me. I thought I was doing pretty good by remaining calm and focused, but the anxiety about the race, the trip, etc has finally caught up with me and I have to admit that I have been a bit short with people today. I snapped at a student (although, christ, this guy has been testing my patience for awhile now -- late all the time, late work, missed days, incomplete work, etc -- anyway, I told him today that he has to get his act together -- or else), and I had a yelling match with my husband over ordering pizza. Yup. We used "fuck" pretty loudly and frequently while arguing over whether or not to order a pizza and if so, what kind of pizza to order. It was, without a doubt, the most unnecessary argument we've ever had.

We both apologized to one another, but the atmosphere has been a bit tense here in Casa de Jess this evening.

So, after spending most of the evening grading papers (discovered 2 that were plagiarized -- get this, they were the same paper, and they had each gotten it from the same website; sometimes I think students forget how many anti-plagiarism tools I have at my disposal, including the same tool they use to plagiarize: the Internet), I went out for a quick 2 mile run.

I had been planning to cross train, but when that was cancelled, I decided to go ahead and do a short run and I'm glad I did. It felt good and it helped relieve some of the building stress.

At this point, homies, I imagine that waiting for marathon day is something comparable to being at the end of a pregnancy -- damn the fears and anxieties, you just want to get it over with.

Thanks for the bib number. I will definitely be watching!!

Maybe you and the hubby need a little stress reliever? :P God, Marcy is rubbing off on me. HA HA

Hang in there. And I'm sure hubby understands the nerves, but doesn't hurt to reiterate that's what it was. (and please take that with a grain of salt as I am the last girl in the world to take marriage advice from !)

GOOD LUCK

What? Your pregnant?

I am sure all will be better soon! I would be a wreck myself!

I think you sound perfectly calm considering what you are about to do. I am speaking from nuttiness over a local 1/2 marathon that is 12 days away... so I think you are doing GREAT!

Totally justified, IMO. You are taking a big trip, and performing an extraordinary feat. You are doing great, but you will need your rest. If you have to chemically induce some restful sleep, so be it.

I, too will be watching for your bib online!

It's so normal to be stressed before such a huge event like this, adding flying to the location, staying in a non-familiar place, etc, etc.

Hope you and hubby are better and enjoyed your pizza!

Ah yes, the I'm really stressed about something else, but you are here and you are an easy target so I'm going to take it out on you, fight. I may have had one or two of those in my life (ok, ok, maybe I've had one or two just this week.) It's going to go great, Jess. Stop stressing out.

I, of course, will impart not advice on how to be less stressed, how to settle disputes with your husband or how to deal with pregnancy.

I could throw you a farewell at the airport but I too will be at the airport on Thursday morning. And, I won't be able to stalk you during the marathon, but I'll be thinking about you while I do my 20 miler on Sunday.

It won't matter though - you'll be rocking those miles anyway.

Inhale. Exhale. Things get edgy over here as well anytime before a big race. So you're in good company in the land of pointless and stupid fights. :)

Have a safe trip!!

You mean fights over pizza and cursing loudly aren't supposed to happen? ;) I've been lucky to have marital harmony this week, but it's due to my hubby having to travel alot this week. That and he's not allowed to speak during certain tv shows.

LMAO Nancy!

Girlfriend, I'm SOOOO stalking you via the internet :P

The thing with a marathon is . . .you do it and it's OVER. The crappy thing about pregnancy/parenting is that it's for the rest of your life :P LOL JK!

You're going to DO AWESOME!!!!! I just know it!! I wish I could be there to swear at you all the way to the finish LOL JK!

You'll be great. I hope you can get through the stress and find some joy in the experience. It is, after all, a pretty special thing to be running a marathon, and to be running Chicago at that. I'll be thinking of you as I'm flying home Sunday from my weekend getaway to my girlfriend's in Arkansas.

Have so much fun! You've done the training - this marathon will be an awesome one for you!!

That's the way I felt before my first marathon too...I just wanted race day to be there so I could get it over with. You will do awesome and I can't wait for the race report.

P.S. Some college kids are really really stupid...the QB of our football team got suspended for the season because he cheated on a pop quiz that was worth like 5% of his final grade.

David said...

So, what kind of f'ing pizza did you f'ing wind up ordering?

Lori said...

Hey! I am just running through quick and wanted to be sure to tell you GOOD LUCK!!! I will be thinking of you the whole time :)

Love your blog! Guess what, I have TWO girls, 3 and 1, and my stress and fear for my first marathon this weekend is WAY more intense than the whole childbirth thing.

Good luck!
