The Group Run

went well.

And, yes, I had nothing to fear. True, these people are pretty serious runners -- most of them were trim, toned, and speedy (I was the "back of the pack" with a few others and we were pacing at 10:00-10:30, so most people were running 8:00-8:30 miles!) -- but they were also very nice, and the coach frequently circled back and forth between the sub-groups to chat and encourage, so that was nice.

As I mentioned previously, I planned on doing 9 miles today, but with the group, I ended up doing 10, and it was 10 that felt good (didn't even need a walk break; although, I was grateful for each water station) despite the incredible humidity and the bugs. At the end of the run, I was literally soaking wet with sweat and I was coated in little black bugs.

Now, that I've experienced the group run, I really don't know how I ever did those long ones by myself; it was seriously that much better, and it just makes so much better sense: it's more motivating, it's safer, and it's better paced. I plan to return to the group next Saturday morning and continue with them. But then what sucks (well, only kinda), is that I'll be out of town two weekends in a row (be in Key West one weekend and Sanibel the next -- poor me, right?) so I'll be on my own for long runs then.

Ahhh, it's good to have that run out of the way for the weekend (and to feel some of my confidence in my training restored), and tomorrow I can sleep in and relax knowing I already got it done! This must be why everyone touts getting up early and getting it done, huh?

It was much easier pacing this morning on my group run, and I had a good one too! Nicely done! Enjoy your Sunday and I do wish I was going back to Key West :-)

SWEET!! I'm so glad things went good. It's crazy how they always work out like that. Everything I think is going to suck, doesn't. And the things I think are going to rock, suck. LOL

How many peeps did you roll with? Were they chatty? LOL Inquiring minds want to know :P

All of you guys and your running groups have me really wanting one. I know I push so much harder when I am with one.

You totally rocked your run!!!!!

Marcy: I would guess that there were about 20-25 people total, and I guess they have up to about 45 (depending on the day and the run -- and summer is kinda unpredicatble for hard numbers since many people vacation then).

I, personally, ran with about 3 peeps. 2 were recovering from knee injuries and 1 was just about my pace. I was glad to have them b/c the others were so speedy I would've been stuck alone! They were kinda chatty. We mostly discussed running, past races, weather, where we were from, etc. We did not touch upon larger politcial, socio-economical, or philosophical topics.

Maybe next week.

Great run, Jess. It's nice to run with a group...even if you are at the back of the pack.

I love running with a group, you are right it is much more motivating. I don't think I could do a training plan by myself now

(look at me asking all these questions. It kind of makes me interested LOL)

In about a month you'll be discussing your sex lives :P

That really makes me want to see if I can join a running group for long runs. I guess the trick is to find one that either fits your schedule, or is flexible enough to let you participate when you can. Thanks for the insight.

That's GREAT Jess!! Glad you had a good experience and you were in the right pace group. I think that is key! Glad it worked out, and yes, I've come to the same conclusion to setting the clock and getting up to get it over with, well worth it! I'm doing mine here in a few minutes and hope to have a good run. Boy, I need it...

great run! Glad you enjoyed the group run experience. I think it will really help motivate you on long runs--you'll have conversation to look forward to in addition to the running.

Yes, yes, yes.

If there's one run you don't want to do alone, it's your 20-miler (or however long your longest will be). I did my first one at night with one other person, and it was HELL.
