Yesterday, in comically cliche running fashion, I gulped down two bugs. It was the sort of ingestion that we typically imagine when we picture insects flying into our gullets: The two literally went THWAP! against the back of my throat as I inhaled them with my gusty running lungs.
Other than swallowing two bugs, I also got one in my eye, and one flew straight up one nostril.
It was an all out bug-assault, and I was like a Jess Tank mowing down the flying insect population. Odd for this time of year; I don't usually think of late October, when we have cooler more temperate weather, as being the normal environment for spawning these small, black gnats. But, nature sometimes surprises.

Yuck! I usually love all things nature but when it comes to bugs while I am running I often flash back to when I was a young kid. My Daddy had a motorcycle and he would take us girls for rides on the farm. There I was sitting in front with my little red helmet and half face guard wearing a giant open mouth grin into which a giant bug flew. It hit the back of my throat and instantly I threw up.
I don't have a lot of clear childhood memories but that one is crystal clear. Unlike the inside of my face shield.
My enemies have been the white flies. I consider it protein to fuel my run and try not to gag over the thought of it. The ones up the nose and in the eyes are the worst!
I can see a statue for saving mankind in your future....... LMAO!
That's pretty gross. I remember once I was running and closed my hand onto something fuzzy... yep, bee. Luckily didn't get stung.
Hahaha - yuck! I've done that before. Have you ever ran through a big cloud of bugs and tried breathing out the whole time. I've almost passed out trying that. Maybe I should just appreciate the protein boost!
It makes me think of that scene in "Overboard" when Goldie Hawn says: "I just ate a bug." Kurt Russell replies: "Keep your mouth closed." Not really possible when running I guess. :)
I share your pain! We have seriously territorially bugs in our area, and they follow you! As soon as you run out of one bug's territory you are in the territory of the next bug. Makes me hate running in the summer! But luckily for me, it's October in Ontario so they are all dead now! :)
My run yesterday was also buggy. I had a couple bounce off my retina, but none were ingested. Cheers!
