Back to Back

Last night, I went for a 3 miler at about 7 pm, and this morning, less than 12 hours later, I was back out there at 5 am for another 3 miler. So, here are my random observations about the differences and similarities between the two times:
  • It is cooler in the morning, but it's more humid. So, I think the trade off makes the temp about the same.
  • There's way less traffic at 5 am, so I really don't have to stop for lights, which is nice.
  • There is some traffic at 5 am, and I always wonder if people are just heading out for work at that hour or just heading home from work.
  • It is just as dark at 5 am as it is by 7:30 pm.
  • I am not any faster at either hour.
  • There are zero other pedestrians at 5 am.
  • There are school buses out driving around at 5 am, which makes me wonder what kids need to be picked up at that hour.
  • Neither McDonald's nor the gas station are open at 5 am, so if I ever have a bathroom emergency at that hour, I'm gonna have to squat behind a bush.
  • I can eat dinner and go run an hour afterward in the evening, and I can drink a cup of coffee and eat a granola bar 20 minutes before a morning run, and I have no stomach issues. Thank you, sweet baby Jesus.
  • Getting up and getting the run done at 5 am is nice because I know that it's done for the day and there's no worrying about how I'll fit it in or around the evening bath time/bedtime routine.
  • Running at 7 pm is nice because it allows me to de-stress from the day, and after a day spent with a two month old, sometimes that alone time feels like magic.

It is nice that you are so flexible and have no problems running in the morning or at night. It does stink that there isn't an hour in which it is cooler for you to run.

Nice job getting out there and running.

This time of year the differences are minor. However, in the heat of the summer, I'll take mornings every single day of the week.

Sounds like you have two viable options. In the summer, it is much cooler for me in the morning. In the fall, I start enjoying running first thing when I get home from work (before dinner) while it's still light out.

5am! Good for you!

Interesting observations. I can see the benefits to both - I just can't get myself out of bed. Especially not now that it's below freezing in the morning. Brrr!

Great job on getting the runs done!
So sorry though that the temps aren't in your favor either way yet!
Funny observations...especially about the school bus. I leave for work at 10 to 6 and I see school buses, too! I always wondered the same thing! :)

Sounds like two-a-days are in your future then! :P

Way to get them done girl!

Great to see the running routine coming back and the weather starting to cooperate a little bit. When is Norah getting her running stroller?

You're so lucky. I always have stomach issues, no matter how long I wait after eating. My meal always makes an appearance at some point (running or swimming). But if I don't eat, my stomach is digesting itself. I can't win.

I like to run doubles each day. When the little kiddos are off school, I do a 6a.m. 6 p.m. run. Once school starts my training usually has to slack off with more kid activities. I just love what each time of day gives me so I try to squeeze them both in when I can. Glad to read I am not the only one out there doing it!!

i like the afternoon/evening running better. Can't seem to get up and going early, except for race day.

I can't make myself get out of bed and showering makes me sleepy, but nice work for knocking it out.

I am not faster in the morning or at night either. Dang. Thought it was just me. LOL!

BTW, I read your comment on Jamoosh's blog and say that about jogging all the time. Silent J?

Also I commented to your comment and felt compelled to come here and tell you that a Ne-Yo song, not sure if you listen to the R & B, is word for word from the movie Anchorman. I thought I was losing it when I heard it on the radio. Look it up. I think it's "I want to be on you" or something.

This time of year, it seems like it's dark either way. No matter what, it's great to get out there and run. I remember those times from maternity leave when I just had to be ready whenever the situation arose - baby fed, husband home, running clothes clean - go!

You are hard core :) Its great that you dont seem to prefer one over the other, like Lisa Slow-n-Steady says ... those two viable options are pretty nice to have.

Really what children need to be picked up at that hour? How odd.
I have run that early in the morning and have had much less observations than you. I think I was partly sleep running!

SO speed isn't relative to time of day???? Didn't Einsteins figure that out?????

Glad you have that flexibility! I'm so not a morning runner, but I now have the mid-morning preschool option and I'm really liking that run.

Wow...lots of comments about the morning/afternoon options. Sounds like both are good.

At least if you have to squat behind a bush at 5am, it'll still be dark :-)

Interesting comparison, either way you are gettin' er done which is what counts!

How can you run in this heat at all? You have my vote!

It's nice that you can manage to run both times. I like running in the morning better, but can't do it with my work schedule!

That's awesome that you're able to run in the morning, great job getting out there.

I always wonder about the people I see driving at 5am, are they going to work? driving home from a long night out? I like to look at them and make up stories about where they're headed.

Sounds like a pretty good routine to me. I wish I had one that solid. It's the getting up in the morning part that's hard for me. And ohhhh running in the morning in Florida is so much more pleasant.

Anyway, I admire your ability to work around having a baby - makes all my excuses feel a bit ridiculous!

I would always do the higher temp over the higher humidity. Just adding myt wo cents
