Monday Miscellany

  • I find sitting down to be an uncomfortable position. In general, I've always felt this way; I'd rather be either standing and moving around or laying down. But, being 6 months pregnant makes sitting a bazillion times worse: Belly is resting uncomfortably on the top of the thighs, regular underwear no longer work (the top of them folds over) and maternity underwear seem to have zero elasticity, my back and my butt kinda hurt when sitting for very long, and I feel as though I draw shorter, less satisfying breaths. Last Friday, I sat in meetings from 9 am to 3:30 pm, and afterward, I thanked my stars I don't have a job where I sit all day.
  • We got our student evalauations back from last semester, and on the whole, students said good things about me and my instruction, but there is always one or two whose criticism just sticks in my brain. One person, for instance, criticized me for using the word "certainly" too often. He or she was apparently so bothered by this repetition that they went so far as to count how often I used the word. So, during my classes today I have been uber-conscious of that piece of criticism and have been hyper-aware of my use of "certainly." And, what effect does that have? A desire to use that word! Urgh.
  • I need some new clothes. Maternity clothes, to be exact. I especially need some more work-appropriate maternity clothes. What I have now works fine, but I am only 5 weeks into the term, and I already feel tired of my clothes. That, and my 2 pairs of work-appropriate slacks aren't really all that great and they're starting to squeeze me (word to the wise: Old Navy's "maternity" pants pretty much suck. Basically, they're just regular pants with a stretchy waist. Fine for those early months, but I'm at a point now where I need more room, but also more support!). Not good. I have some giftcards for Motherhood that I got for Christmas, and I think soon I'll need to put them to good use.

I think a lot of people have certain (ha ha) words that they fall back on... I try not to think about it. ;) That student must have been really trying hard not to pay attention if he/she was worrying about your word usage all day!

I certainly believe that the student in question certainly has some issues that will certainly prvent him or her from reaching his or her certain potential.

Nothing like getting called out on something to make you overly aware of it ... and also completely incapable of stopping it ;) I definitely use "like" and I know there are quite a few others. Students have a knack of picking it up because they are just sitting there staring at you / listening to you. I tend to pick up facial ticks and quirks and then obsess over them the entire time someone speaks. It makes things fun :)

I saw you over at "Run Like A Mother" site. Loved your post. We moved to south Florida (Fort Lauderdale) in July of this past year. Oh.My.Heat.

I have finally recovered from it (though what's with 80s in February) but liked your words about slogging through and just doing it!

I was a Colorado running girl and hope to return some day but until then, I'll try to let South Florida inspire me (and those hills).

Love your blog!

You're better than me, I would have emphasized "certainly", except like Curly from the three stooges ... "Coooiwtanly!", over and over and over!

I have never heard you lecture but I can certainly say this is not a regular word in conversation. Silly student.

Granted, I have had instructors in the past that used words so frequently that I have counted them in the past too. I don't think I ever put that on an eval though.

As for pregnancy and sitting, that's probably because you are normally an active person and stand alot. Even if you were a 9-5 desk jobber, pregnancy and sitting do not mix no matter what. Hang in there, only a few more months!

I need to go shopping too, however we seem to be heading in opposite directions on that one! Otherwise a shopping day would be great :)

I had our school pyschologist tell me that I use the phrase "what not" a lot, especially in meetings. She told me this the morning of an intense assessment results meeting and it's all I could think about when trying to present a lot of information to a set of parents! ugh!!

Ugh, I remember that feeling of not enjoying sitting. I had it particularly bad with S as he had his feet up in my ribs from really early.

Have fun finding some cute clothes!

Me thinks that student needs to hit the local student pub more.... if that the worst word you are repeating!!
Enjoy some retail therapy!

I like people who say certainly a lot!

I can't believe a student actually counted how many times you said "certainly". At least it wasn't "like".

Have fun shopping!

Maybe you should encourge your students to turn the use of the word certainly into a drinking game . . . :)

Just came over here from Run Like a Mother. I am 36 weeks pregnant now, have a desk job, and hate hate hate this feeling of the belly on the thighs! I had to go shopping recently too since the Old Navy maternity pants were not cutting it. Found that the Motherhood brand with the full belly panel (which I swore I would never wear) are the most comfy and supportive. Good luck the rest of the way!

Certainly there are words that we all use more frequently than others but I certain that your use of the words wasn't offensive as that certain student says. Sounds like a drinking game.

I hear you 100% on the Old Navy maternity pants! The worst, the band cuts you off at the most uncomforable spot, I have always found motherhood pants to be better in that dept!

The 2nd pregnancy is truley more tiring to me, sorry your feeling that way as well. This past 2 weeks have been super uncomforable for me, I got all the way up to 31 weeks feeling pretty good no complaints and now here I am feeling crummy. I hope things turn on the upside for you!

When I was in college, I had a professor who used the word "essentially" A LOT. I did mention it on the observation, but I think I did so constructively
