Rainy Day Run

Yesterday it rained all day long. And it was glorious. We haven't had significant rainfall in months (dry season) and things were looking pretty brown; plus, I just love gray, rainy days. Maybe it's the break in the weather pattern or maybe it just feels cozy to me -- either way, I like it.

So in the evening, in a break between showers, I got out for a 3 miler, and it was the perfect weather out: cooler, still cloudy, with that delicious rain smell scenting the air. It was a nice run, and when I finished, I felt super fantastic.

In general, I still feel pretty good running. I'm way slower, for sure, and I don't get as many miles in a week (I've been averaging 12-15 per week lately), but for the most part I'm happy to get done what I get done. However, I do have to admit that this business of running while pregnant is harder than I thought it would be.

For one thing, I have now gained approximately 8 lbs, which is pretty average at this point, and while that's not much weight, on my frame, I can really feel the difference of carrying around those extra pounds while running. Especially since that weight is all out front in my belly and boobs.

Additionally though, running just wears me out more than it ever did before. It is probably because of my slightly elevated heart rate and increased lung capacity (which you would think would make running easier but I actually find myself somewhat short of breath); in many ways, just being pregnant is like exercise for your body, so adding regular exercise to the day can really wear a girl out. I finish my 3 milers and I feel as though I just ran 10.

Despite these aspects that make it harder, I still plan to continue with it for as long as possible simply because I believe that the benefits far outweigh the difficulties. But if I can feel the difference of lugging along 8 lbs now, I can ony imagine how things will be in a few months when I'm lugging far more weight!

OMG pregnancy hooters. I totally forgot about that! Well not that they get big, but having to lug them around while exercising. Man I can't imagine running with those LOL

I love the smell of fresh rain, too.

I think it's amazing that you're still running. Way to go, girl!

Having just had a baby myself and remember quite clearly how it feels to be knocked up, you are so unreal!! I'm so impressed that you are running, girl.

I was worn. out. My doctor said that being pregnant is like exercising 24/7 at a moderate pace. I thought that explained it nicely because I was just amazed that something so small made me so very tired.

Congrats to you for keeping up such an impressive pace. :)

Great job Jess, keep on runnin' strong. Just think how strong you will be when you lose the pregnancy weight!

I love running right after it's rained and it's still cool...in the rain itself is a bit less fun.

You are doing awesome. I had zero energy when I was pregnant. The fact that you get out there and run is wonderful. I pretty much crawled through my pregnancy.

Everything just seems so fresh and new again, after a good rain.

So glad you're still running and feeling better!

I'm glad to know there are women out there who still run while pregnant. I have a lot of friends who think that as soon as they're pregnant they'll stop exercising until after the baby comes. they think I'm crazy when I say I still want to run when I get pregnant.

You give me hope for when that time does come for me!

It rained for four days straight here! You are doing great with the running. I also think you are being very smart about it to.

12-15 miles is a lot of mileage for this boy!! LOL... You are doing so well. I agree with Marcy too! Bigger hooters is a big bonus :-)

Good job on still getting out there. I'm quite impressed. I never ran once I got big, but I found that even the elliptical or a stationery bike was exhausting near the end.

You're doing so good with running while pregnant. That post-baby weight is going to fall right off.

I think it's really awesome that you're still getting out there and getting runs in even if they are slower than you're used to!

Hey, I can finally chime in on this prego thang. I can relate to carrying an additional 8 - 10 lbs. and running a lot slower. Yours will be gone in a few months, mine won't!!!

It was great to have a long rainy day. The grass already looks much better and the pool has been refilled!

I loved warm, rainy Florida days.

Not hurricanes, mind you. Just rainy days.

You're doing great, chica! I can barely get my butt walking, nevermind running. :)

It sounds like you're making pregnancy into a type of strength training.
