Tomorrow, I kick off my spring break by heading up to Orlando for Sunday's Princess Half Marathon at Disney. I'm excited for this half since I'll be joined by a few friends, and because, simply, Disney knows how to do a good race.
But...
One dilemma and one drawback:
First, the dilemma:
It's gonna be damn cold at the start. Well, cold by Florida standards, and thus, cold by my standards. It's predicted to be about 4o degrees at the 6 am start (I know, I know, for some of you that sounds like a heat wave, but for me, that's gonna feel chilly); now, granted, it'll warm up some and, really, those temps are perfect for running: cool, dry air is way better than the hot, humid air that I've run every other Disney event in, but standing around at the start at 4 am in 40 degree weather is gonna be cold.
So, what to wear? Clearly, the ideal would be some kind of throw-away layer with a short sleeved tech underneath, but I really don't have any throw away sweatshirts or long sleeved tees. I do have one really old sweatshirt that I could probably part with via this means, but I'm a bit reluctant to do that. So, I think I may go to either Target or Walmart this morning and see if they carry any cheap, disposable shirts that may work well for this purpose.
That, or...wear a long sleeved tech over a short sleeved, and take it off and tie it around my waist once I get warm. This is a less wasteful option, but a more cumbersome one.
Or, there is always the garbage bag option; I'm just not that found of that one.
Any further suggestions or help? I'm open to other thoughts.
Finally, then, my one drawback about this race:
Jerry and Norah are staying home, so it will be my first night away from Norah. I'll only be gone about 24 hours, but still, I'm gonna miss her! But, maybe that will motivate me to run the race faster so I can get home to her :)

I'm always cold LOL, so I'd be able to wear a long sleeve shirt and keep it on. But, I'd probably go the tie it around my waist route if I got warm.
Have a good trip. Enjoy the break 'cause it'll make you enjoy the time with Norah even more.
I would go with long sleeves and tie around waist.
And btw, while I don't think 40deg is cold, it certainly don't think anyone will think that it is warm! Especially at the beginning while you are standing around waiting.
my 40 degree outfit is capris a long sleeve tech shirt with a long sleeve cotton over top and I usually stay just fine with that...but that's just my two cents and chilly body
I would wear a long sleeved tech shirt (can get them cheap at Target) and just roll the sleeves up if you get warm.
I would wear my arm-warmers, oh that's right you didn't get any! Just wear whatever the elite women will be wearing.
makeshift arm warmers.
tube socks and cut a hole at the bottom; slip em on, and slip em off and toss to the side.
Another vote for the long sleeves over short sleeve top, then tie around waist as it warms up. If you do go the disposable route, most races gather up those shirts and donate them to homeless shelters and such.
Good luck!! I'm excited to hear how you do! My aunt, cousin, mom and I are all planning on doing it next year in honor of my cousin beating lymphoma! can't wait!
If you want to buy a throw away shirt, Old Navy usually has ridiculously cheap clearance items. I have bought a few throw-away long sleeve and short sleeve shirts each for under $5 (Most for under $2). They're not the most stylish of their shirts...but they for $2-5 I can't say I really care.
I would probably go long sleeve and then tie it around my waist - that way you have it handy if you get chilly after the race, too.
Good luck and have fun!
thrift
store.
Running the Disney Princess sounds like the coolest race ever!! Are you going to wear a crown??
Do you have a Goodwill/Salvation Army store around where you live. Buy something really cheap so you don't feel bad when you ditch it.
Have fun! Looking forward to your race report.
Goodwill. I expect that Disney would donate back any tossed layers (most big races do), so it's basically a $3 donation to Goodwill in the end. (Tax write off! ha.)
Good luck to Jerry with solo duties!
hey! i'm running this race too!
i'll be wearing short sleeves, arm warmers and a running skirt. I will have throwaway gloves too (Big Lots had 3/$1 gloves). i will probably wear a zip up and check it right before i head over to my corral. check thrift shops for cheap tops.
i ran the Gasparilla marathon last weekend and had the same plan and it worked fine. i actually kept my gloves on most of the race.
i'll be solo too tomorrow - i'm sure my husband and little boy will be sound asleep at the hotel -probably even when i'm done!
have a great race! maybe i'll see you!
Funny, our 'high' temp on Sunday is going to be about the same as your 'low' and I'm thinking about wearing shorts!
I would go with the throw-away option if you can find something, becuase I *hate* having anything around my waist.
Good luck and have fun!
Good luck this weekend! Have fun!
Good! Will! They sell shirts for like, a quarter there. :o)
Good luck tomorrow. You're going to do GREAT.
You could always look at like a Goodwill or Salvation Army too and a lot of races donate tossed items back to charities, so it's not a total waste.
awe...well good luck! I am sure you will do great and seeing Norah and Jerry when you return home will be that much more special :)
Not that the Wal-Mart near me will have the same deals down there, but I saw sweatshirts there for $5. I'd opt for the trash bag. It's cheap and you look like a bad ass when you rip it off ala Superman (or Supergirl, I suppose, in your case).
I'm so jealous that you get to do the Princess 1/2!
I don't have any good suggestions... I've always peeled off layers and tied them around my waist. I'm like you and don't have stuff that I could just throw away.
It's not the same thing, but I haven't had a night away from my husband since we've been married (that's over 5 years now!)... so I can feel some of your pain.
I hate wasting things...so I would recommend just tying it around your waist. But if you're really in a pinch got to Goodwill! But I think that has already been said :)
Good luck girly! Have fun and you're right, Disney knows how to put on a race! Can't wait for the report!
Good luck to Jerry, too! :)
That is a biggie! The first night away from the little one. Good Luck!
The Salvation Army or Goodwill is great for finding disposable clothes but the trash bag is the least wasteful bet.
do you have arm warmers?? they seriously are AWESOME. keep you warm and you can just fold them down/take them off if you get too hot. i LOVE them.
have a great race and have fun on your weekend away, even though i am sure it will be hard :)
Too bad Norah and Jerry can't go and watch then you guys could hotel it!
I know it's wasteful, but there's something really fun about stripping off the long sleeve tee and chucking it...
Good Luck!! And fwiw, I've found the easiest thing to do is grab a $10 shirt from Target and toss it. Most races donate all the throw away clothes, so no waste! :)
This weather is my absolute favorite to run in, but maybe I am crazy.
I have run on a few 40 degree mornings lately, runs of 10-12 miles. I have been wearing a long sleeved tech shirt, with a running vest (winter type) over it, and I've found that to be just fine. Warm enough, but I don't get too warm during the run. Anything over the low 40's for a temp though, and I don't wear it, it would be too warm. I got mine at TJ Maxx a few weeks ago, it's been getting a lot of use during this cold (for FL!) winter.
Good luck! Have fun with the race, I have never done the princess half, but other Disney races I've done have been great.
I'm heading down to Plantation this weekend, so I need to do my long run there (I have a half in 2 weeks). I am hoping that since it'll be 40 on Sunday morning here in Orlando, that it'll still be cold enough for me down there to enjoy a long run!
Good luck...can't wait to hear all about it!!! I have done the shirt around the wasit during training runs and it does get a bit annoying...it seems to depend on the shirt...some stay ties better than others.
I've heard of people getting a sweater or shirt from good will and then tossing it when they got too warm. Good luck on your race! I'm so jealous! I'm going to sign up for it next year!
Find a $4.00 sweatshirt and toss it. The take a layer off and tie it around the race routine makes for crappy race pictures.
good luck! I'ts crazy how cold it is there. I always do layers - on top a zip up that I tie around my waste.
Good luck @ Disney!
My vote is for a cheap long sleeved shirt that you can toss. I think most races pick up discarded garments and donate them, right? Have a great race!
Have a great time - I can't wait to read about it. I have always wanted to do that race.
This Colorado girl thinks 40ยบ is cold too.... I usually wear a long sleeve shirt that I don't mind ditching during the race. I hate having anything tied around my waist and I really hate having rolled up sleeves that keep rolling down.
the princess race sounds like fun! I'm definitely jealous! :) have a great time.
Have any old knee socks that you don't care if you cut off the feets? I've been doing ghetto arm warmers on these cold Texan mornings. Congratulations on the birth of your little Norah!!! I'm so happy for you and Jerry!!!
Good luck tomorrow!
