Stinky and Cold

This morning, I got up at 6:30, checked the weather, and it was 34 degrees outside! I have lived in South Florida for 6 years, and I have never seen the temp dip so low here. In fact, Jerry had a thin layer of frost on his windshield this morning and had to actually utilize an ice scraper!

In the house, it was 66, so Jerry and I made the executive decision to turn the heat on. Since we live in a condo, we are partially insulated by the unit above us and to the side of us, so in the 5 years we've lived here, we have never once had to turn on the heat. Yes, the temp in the house has dipped into the high 60s before, but we just put an extra blanket on the bed at night and cuddle up.

But last night, we both were worried about how warm Norah was that neither of us slept very well. She was in warm, fleece PJs, and we put two blankets on her, but then when we put blankets on her, we worry about her choking or something -- even though she falls asleep in one position and pretty much doesn't move the rest of the night. So, this morning, when we all got up, Jerry announced: "I'm turning on the heat."

The result? It's warmer in here but it stinks! 5 years of never turning it on means all that dust that has settled in there is getting burnt off and the aroma is like burning hair. Which is probably paritally true.

Anyhoo...I never thought I'd say this, but I didn't run this morning because it was too cold! And it was too tough to leave the warm, snuggliness of bed. However, I plan to bring my running stuff with me to work today and run between classes. I have about 3 hours after my last afternoon class and before my evening class, and because it's the first week of class, I have the time to burn. And by then it should be in the 50s. I'll let you know how it goes.

Stay warm everyone!

So we need to invent the Snuggie for runners? I never thought about a place that never turned on the furnace.....

dang that's cold for FL!

I think of how much money I could save if I never had to turn on my heat.... but I would literally freeze to death. LOL

Do they even sell ice scrapers in Florida? Or did Jerry use a credit card?

Yikes, that is cold...

but like Ken and Stacy, we'd freeze to death if we never turned on our furnaces...btw, I keep my house at 64F during the winter...

I turned on my heat yesterday for Rylee, her lips were purple! It stunk too but now smells better. I left it on. John went home to
-27 so he is not sympathetic.

Just think of all those people who come to FL to get away from the cold!!! I guess it's a bit warmer than other places but in comparison to what you're used to....ugh!

we worry about her choking or something

This caught my attention the most and made me LOL... You guys are doing fine. Norah isn't going to choke on blankets. She might sweat a lot under two blankets... ROFL... If she was cold, she would let you know!

Warmer weather is coming you way. It was cold like that here in AZ the past couple of weeks but yesterday it was mid-70's again. I sound like such a wuss, but when you deal w/ 115 degree temps, 35 degrees feels immediately colder than it did before when I lived in MI and the highest temp was 90.

Enjoy your afternoon run!

I don't even think we own an ice scraper! This weather is crazy, I can't stand it!

Again, Al Roker said it was "unusally cold" for FL this morning, and I dipped my head and said a little prayer for ya! 34 is COLD, even for me! I ran outside last night with 49 degress and thought I would die!
Good luck girly! And Wes is right, Nora is just fine - you guys are great parents!! :)

That's why we northerners invented layering. It keeps you warm on those cold runs. Though, maybe you never bought proper layering gear like how you never had to turn on your heat ...

I have been thinking we need to move to South Florida for the warm weather. I guess it all depends on what you are use to. I am getting ready for a run in 10 degree weather - as long as it is above 0 I am happy - but I would rather run in 34 degree weather. At least in the summer I don't have to run in 90 degree weather.

I'm always so jealous of people who live in an area that is normally warm in the winter. I dread the Fall/Winter in the pacific northwest because it's chilly, damp, and well down right dreary!

It is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO hard to get out there this time of year. It's easy to talk yourself out of it. I did just that Yesterday! Uuugh!

Hope it warms up for you... I've got a couple more months to go. Sniff.

#1: You actually own an ice scraper in FL? #2: That stinky heat smell is how we know it's winter here in Vancouver... #3: As long as the back of Norah's neck is a comfy temp, then she should be comfy too.

Oh hot damn how is it the same temp in FL that it is in DC. What is going on in the world? So much for global warming I guess haha.

I WISH I could run in 34 ... thats practically HOT around here ;)

Also, overheating is a bigger concern for babies than not enough warmth. Make sure you guys dont bundle her up too much...

I'm just impressed that you OWN an ice-scraper (although I do remember that you drove north last winter). I haven't owned one of those since leaving Reno :-)

Wow that is cold for FL!

What a funny concept to never turn on the heat in 5 years. But I know that smell because before babies I didn't use all the rooms in my house and when we did...yuck the smell when we turned on the heat! Gross to think about!

We set off our smoke alarm one year with that burning heat smell. :)

My word verification is "obless" so I guess I'm supposed to bless you. :)

This cold weather in the South/Southeast in crazy! I truly don't know how all the runners manage who live in cold climates.
