This morning at 5:30, it was only 58 degrees here, which for me makes for a brisk start for my run, but don't get me wrong: I think 58 is a perfect temp to run in -- cool enough that the air feels comfortable, but warm enough that I can still go out in shorts and sports bra. So, with a cool temp and fresh legs, my run felt really good this morning despite the fact that it was not fast (the 3 miles took me 33 minutes), and I have to admit that I'm kinda liking the early AM run these days.
Granted, it's still tough as hell to be motivated at that ungodly hour, but running through the darkened neighborhood so early in the morning carries a strange sense of satisfaction with it: With so little traffic and virtually no other pedestrians out, it feels like I'm the only person awake then. Plus, I usually have enough time when I get home to shower and have a quick breakfast before Norah wakes up, so it helps to know that the run is entirely "my" time and it doesn't intrude on my family at all.
Of course, I can wax poetic about morning running right now, when it's done for the day, but if you ask me tomorrow morning at 4:50 how much I like it, I might tell you to shove something up your ass.

Lovin' that last sentence. It's just so true.
I'm so glad you're finally coming around to the morning run! It's so empowering to be out so early and know that your workout is DONE for the day! I'm sure little Norah appreciates you doing it before she gets up too! Congrats on your first post-baby race, too. I smiled thinking of Norah on the sidelines "cheering" for you! Kids just put an extra step in the process, so good for you for getting out and doing it!
Couldn't agree more. On the rare occasion that I actually wake up early to run, I love it out there. It's the getting out of bed part that hurts.
Girl, you are an inspiration. And a truth-teller, my oh my.
Although I don't know that I'd ever be able to say that I like getting up that early.
Oh for sure- every morning I wake up at 4:45 and say, "I don't want to workout." Then at 6:30 AM, when I'm done with my workout I say, "I'm glad I worked out."
It's so stupid. You just gotta do it! It's always great AFTERWARDS but dreadful to start! =]
I am so excited to move and cut out my two hours of commuting daily! I will finally have time to run during the week again without it cutting into the three measly hours I have with my husband before we pass out or forcing my to get up before 4:30 in the morning!!
Good for you. Thanks for being an inspiration!
Great job getting up and getting the run done early. Here it is noon, and I'm finally getting my butt out the door. I don't know if this applies to the rest of your readers, but as much as I appreciate the cute pictures of Norah, its been ages since I've seen a picture of my favorite pooch, Scooter. Any chance of seeing a pic once every couple of weeks or so?
OMG, you're back and in more ways than one! LMAO!!!
So, when do you start bowling??
I love to run in the mornings, but I don't like to get up at 5 AM (before work) to do them. I have narrowed it down to long morning runs on Saturday and Sunday. The rest of the week, it's running after work...some days long; some days short. As long as I keep my eating in check, this works well for me.
Also, congratulations on last weekend's 10K! That's awesome1
I still must bow down to you for getting up so early and getting all that done. I have no kids, a very independent dog and husband and getting up to run in the morning is just awful. Great job Jess! ;)
HA! Great post. Stumbled on your bloga nd read your summary. I am on day 3 of the same journey to reach a habit forming goal. Will check back! thanks
So true! Way to get those early runs in.
You're so hardcore. :o)
Way to get the running in! I just can't do the morning thing...
I see your run was as nice as mine this morning. Good times!
i admire anyone who can run early. especially with a newish baby. and can run a race that close to goal pace. good job!
Running in the morning is a bit of a love/hate relationship for me. Love it when I get it done in the cooler temps and less crowded conditions. Hate gettin' out of bed when its dark and cold outside. Ick. But glad you're getting out there and getting it done!
The having it done part is always the best part of every run!!
Good job getting it done in the a.m.!!
it feels so good when you are done, but man it is hard leading up to it and actually getting up!
a bit snippity today :-)
