The Best Part of Morning Running

Even though it was only 71 degrees out at 5:30 this morning, the humidity was at a whopping 98% (it rained most of the night last night), so my 3 miler felt as though I was treading water instead of running. And by the end, I was sweat drenched and may as well have been swimming.

But aside from the high humidity, it was a good run, and I have to say that while most people tout morning running's greatest aspect as getting it done first thing in the day, I would have to say that the best part of morning running is the attitude of superiority that I get to adopt because I get it done first thing in the day.

See, if you and I were to be in the middle of a casual conversation, I could ask you: "What were you doing this morning at 5:30 AM?" And you would be like, "Sleeping." And my snotty, self-satisfied remark could take many shapes but would probably be something close to this: "Huh. Well that sounds like a waste of time. I was up and out on the streets running. I guess I just take my health more seriously."

Now, if only I could arrange opportunites for conversations to open up to the above possibility. Otherwise, my superiority at having risen early and ran before sunrise is for not. I mean, if I can't brag about it, what good is it?

  1. Knowing you, you will find at least one way to bring this up in conversation today. Just don't ruin it by picking another runner or dedicated morning exerciser.

  2. That cracks me up. I was definitely still sleeping at 5:30 (and 6:30) and I now that I'm up, I'm wasting time before going to work and eating oatmeal cookies, convincing myself they are breakfast worthy because they are oatmeal.

  7. That is the absolutely only good thing about running that early in the morning, so go find those lazy sleepers today. (looks like you found several right here ;-)

  9. I love morning running. I am usually up at 5:15 each morning to hit the gym, but today, well, I was still sleeping. Up too late last night.

Too funny. However, when I am up early in the morning to run while everyone else is sleeping I think the same thing!

  15. That's such a great feeling!

You should try to catch people yawning, and be like "oh, up early?" and go from there - bc I bet they weren't :)

  16. Just ask people what they had for breakfast - surefire gateway into the whole "I'm awesome and you suck" conversation. :)

  19. 5:30am! Woot? I was already done with 1500 yards at the pool, LOL.

  20. You need to (very publicly) eat lunch at around 10, 10:30. When someone asks why you are eating lunch so early, just explain that you got up at 5. The obvious question is "why were you up at 5" and you get to explain that you were putting some miles on your kicks.

    See? Its easy!

  21. seriously I dot understand how it can still be so humid when I get up in the morning. I'm used to KC where in the mornings you can beat the weather...Miami it's beating me!

  22. FUNNY!!! It's great to have the conversation planned and ready to go, IF the opportunity arises.

Ouch to your heat!!! It's was trying to snow on me last night! And we had a "hard" frost this morning!

  25. Bragging is an integral part of any running. Most people have trouble enough comprehending that I can run 10 miles straight. Nevermind that I can do that before the sun rises.
